Math 3 Updates
3rd Graders will have 2 field trips this week, allowing only 3 days for our math class. On our 1st day we will review multiplication facts and strategies. In our 2nd day, Learners will take a multiplication assessment. For our final day together we will introduce the concept of division through a strategy using repeated subtraction. Like at the beginning of multiplication when we used repeated addition, similarly, we will relate division to taking away repeatedly from a total. Division will be related to their daily lives to make the concept more meaningful. Parents and families can help at home by bringing attention to situations when sharing resources equally, such as food, money, or chores.
3rd grade continues to practice multiplication facts. We will begin with a focus on patterns when multiplying by tens. We will still apply strategies such as circles and stars, and arrays, even after we discover patterns with zeros. The rest of the week will be multiplication centers. Learners will create word problems, play games, and practice with flashcards.
3rd grade will study properties of multiplication each day this week. We will learn about the commutative property, identity property, distributive property, and associative property. Learners are becoming more and more fluent with multiplication facts as we practice facts using a variety of strategies. The most simple of strategies is circles and stars, for example 5 X 4 can be illustrated as 5 groups of 4 stars in each. Learners can then count up the stars. Some learners however, are memorizing facts at this point and do not need to rely on that strategy. To assess the ability to name the property, there will be a quiz toward the end of the week. I will show many videos to support learning of the properties.
