Math 3 Updates
For the remainder of the year we will be reviewing the most challenging concepts for third graders. We will review adding and subtracting decimals, time, and fractions. In regard to fractions we will specifically review adding and subtracting fractions, decomposing fractions and equivalent fractions.
You can help at home by reviewing counting by 5s with learners and asking them to practice telling time for you with an analog clock. Also, it's beneficial for you to use time measurement vocabulary as a model for students. For example, "it's a quarter past 3" or "it's half past five." Third graders complete their math portion of the food truck project and are ready to complete their final drafts in Humanities. This week we have also been reviewing decimals, learning about decimal place value and how to add and subtract decimals in preparation for ordering from other learner menus.
Third graders will begin their food truck project. They will look over food truck menus, practice making prices for food items, and begin brainstorming their restaurant name and style. Learners are also discovering food adjectives used to describe food items and make them appealing to patrons.
This is testing week- Learners will be assessed in ELA and Math this week. We are also reviewing concepts we've covered over the year. For example, addition and subtraction with regrouping, rounding, fractions, graphing, time, multiplication etc.
Learners are continuing practicing and understanding elapsed time. We begin looking at line and pictographs as well. Most importantly, we look to understand how a key is used with pictographs. How do we use line plots in everyday life? Third graders work to understand how and why we use this type of graph.
Learners are continuing to explore quadrilaterals and elapsed time. We are practicing basic math skills like using academic language and identifying key words in multi-step problems. When we return from Spring Break learners will begin their interdisciplinary project and be making menus for their food truck project.
We are really delving into shape attributes. Learners should be able to sort shapes by their vertices, faces and sides. We are also beginning to discuss elapsed time. Lastly, we are discussing area and perimeter more in-depth with our learners.
Elapsed Time- Elapsed time is simply the amount of time that passes from the beginning of an event to its end. Some great questions for learners... What makes a shape a quadrilateral? What makes a polygon a polygon? What is the difference between parallel, perpendicular, and Intersecting lines? Third graders are practicing identifying shapes. We will begin finding area and perimeter of triangles this week and next.. The goal is able to be able to identify shapes by their different attributes. We will also begin exploring elapsed time.
Some new vocabulary to practice at home: congruent, parallel, line, line segment, perpendicular, right angle, abtuse angle, acute angle, attribute. Learners are developing their knowledge of Geometry. We have learned about vertices, lines and line segments. Learners are exploring 2D and 3D shapes. Most importantly they are learning shape attributes and how to partition shapes. Learners have been asked to look for examples of 2D and 3D shapes in everyday life.
Learners complete their benchmark assessments this week. We will also begin practicing for state assessments which will be mid-april. Learners are working on the format of testing, not the content. We will practice features such as drag and drop, scrolling, and using the line tool. We will also focus on how to break apart multi-step problems and checking work so we can show what we know.
