Math 3 Updates
Third grade learners practice making groups and arrays of numbers to represent multilplying numbers. There is a focus on multiplication as repeated addition. It's less scary this way. :) Also, learners will be taking their Unit 2 assessment as well as working on their interdisciplinary project for math. Lastly, we have introduced the commutative property for addition and subtraction.

Learners begin their Unit on Multiplication (5 week Unit). We have tons of games, crafts and projects to help learners master multiplication for the next couple weeks. We are working toward an understanding that addition and multiplication go together. We will draw many pictures and draw arrays. This week we will make an "Array City." We will teach all of the strategies for multiplying including repeated addition, skip counting etc.
Multiplication Facts- Why is knowing them so important? Learning multiplication is an important foundation for learning different aspects of mathematics such as division, algebra, long multiplication, and even fractions. For students that don’t have a solid grasp of the times tables, they may find these other areas to be hard to understand as well. Lack of arithmetic skills makes it difficult for a child to keep up with class and this can cause them to fail and fall behind. Using a calculator is not going to teach your child math and sometimes there just aren’t 30 seconds to pull out a calculator and figure out a problem. *This is one of the few areas where we do recommend drill and practice to learn multiplication facts. Third graders continue to practice regrouping with addition and subtraction and solving multi-step word problems. They are beginning to feel more comfortable with the amount of work. There is a big jump from 2nd to 3rd grade and we are very proud of them. This week we will complete our Unit and get prepared to enter the wonderful world of multiplication with our learners. We are also prepping to begin our first interdisciplinary project with the students. We still have a focus on note-taking in the classroom. This expectation will be strong all year long.
The learners work to develop their own word problems to prepare for their Unit project. We will review the Benchmark assessment including Addition and Subtraction and Place Value- Specifically rounding numbers, working with numbers in word form and comparing numbers. You can help at home by reviewing the Benchmark assessment with your third grader and looking over those missing skills.
