Math 3 Updates
Third graders continue area and perimeter exploration. We will also begin our review of multiplication and time. These two concepts will be our focus for the remainder of the year. An example of area and perimeter for home practice is: covering surfaces with fabric then measuring the frame of the surface (around the edge). Students are getting really good at measuring area and perimeter. Also, it's important to note that they should always label their measurements with a unit. For example, "perimeter = 30 square units."

Third grade continues to explore area and perimeter. We are measuring our own shapes and recording the area and perimeter. We will be reading Beast Academy's chapter on area and perimeter. What a great resource! To help at home you can encourage academic vocabulary such as unit, area and perimeter when learners speak about measurement. Comparing perimeter to a fence around a garden and area to the soil that covers the garden is also helpful.
If you are not familiar with Beast Academy click here to explore their materials. Beast Academy Third graders are continuing to work on their expo project. When completed we will complete our final Benchmark assessment. Wow! We can't believe how much they've learned! After the Benchmark is completed we will be exploring area and perimeter. You can help at home by having an open dialogue with learners about area and perimeter. For example, the difference between packing a box for moving (area) and building a fence for a garden (perimeter).
We are beginning project development for Expo night this week. In Humanities, the 3rd graders are working in their restaurant Unit. In our class we will create our own menu to go along with their project. Learners will build a menu of healthy food options with realistic prices. This is such a fun project and we look forward to you seeing the final product on Expo night.
The third graders will complete warm-up questions about measurement (graphing) in preparation for Benchmark assessments. We will further explore bar graphs and pictographs and begin learning about measuring to the nearest inch and quarter inch. You can help by practicing measurement of everyday objects at home using a ruler or other objects.
