math 5 Updates
For the remainder of the school year we will be reviewing challenging concepts for fifth graders. For example, we will be reviewing variables, fractions with unlike denominators, fraction word problems, multiplying fractions by whole numbers, and comparing decimals (understanding place value).

Fifth graders completed their equation clocks this week. They look fantastic and definitely show their understanding of grade level material. We have also been reviewing ordering decimals and multiplying whole numbers and fractions.
Learners begin to prep for their equation clock project. They will be creating equations using all prior knowledge.
`Testing continues for this grade (Science) Testing begins for 5th graders.
Learners learn about line plots more in-depth. We also continue graphing practice and multiplying decimals. Most importantly, how can we compare fractions? We will learn strategies to help us. Lastly, we are reviewing concepts from earlier in the year in preparation for testing. We continue to build knowledge about coordinate grids and function charts & tables. We'll practice identifying patterns and explore line plots. What is the importance of graphing using a line plot?
Fifth graders continue practice of order of operations, expressions and equations. They are also working with coordinate grids to determine how to plot points. We look forward to watching the final four on March 31st so we can complete our March Madness Project. Lastly, this year 5th grade will complete the clock activity and a walk-a-thon project.
Learners will review order of operations (PEMDAS) and work to understand expressions.
For example, "4 times the sum of 6 and 2" or "3 times the sum of an unknown number c and 15" An Algebraic Expression.- An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide). We also reviewed variables. Variable- A variable is a quantity that may change within the context of a mathematical problem or experiment. Typically, we use a single letter to represent a variable. Lastly, we are finishing up our March Madness project packets and continuously reviewing how to change fractions to decimals and percents. Fifth graders are completing March Madness Brackets. We will review the order of operations and go back to work on converting fractions to decimals and percentages. This project gives us the perfect opportunity to investigate the relationships between percents, decimals and fractions. We will also look into expressions.

In the meantime, fifth graders are learning about order of operations. We are using PEMDAS to help us remember order of operation. P = parenthesis E = exponents M = multiply D = divide A = add S = subtract. We use order of operations when solving longer equations. For example, 10 + 3(2 + 6) = 3 x 8 = 24 plus 10
Fifth graders continue to build on prior knowledge. They will be practicing manipulating fractions- finding the LCM and changing improper fractions to mixed numbers. We are also completing benchmarks this week and test prep for state testing. Learners will be practicing test format and not content. For example, how to solve multi-step problems, check work etc. And how to dissect problems.
