math 5 Updates
5th Graders continue to enjoy their study and practice of geometry. Learners are using protractors to gain more hands-on knowledge about measuring and drawing angles, which will be assessed mid-week via an Exit Ticket. They will also finish an interdisciplinary project that connects to their Water Conservation study in Science class. Learners will create a poster that illustrates data researched and collected about water usage. Upon returning in January, we will still in our Geometry Unit. In addition to studying 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional figures, we will also apply our multiplication skills to solving for the volume of rectangular prisms. Learners will have connector cubes to build various polygons, and will use the formula Length X Width X Height (LxWxH) to calculate the volume. During the winter break, please help maintain your Learner’s math sense by sharing meaningful dialogue about real life situations that incorporate mathematical reasoning, as well as having him/her regularly practice their math facts (with all four operations).
Key Terms: lines, line tangents, points, rays, angles, polygons, quadrilaterals, acute/obtuse/right triangles, isosceles/scalene/equilateral triangles

5th Graders will review past topics at the beginning of the week to prepare for Benchmark #2. For this assessment Learners will demonstrate their ability to multiply, divide, and solve numerical patterns and algebraic expressions using the order of operations. A heavier focus will be placed on algebraic expressions and equations, as this is major content standard for 5th grade. After completing the Benchmark assessment, we will resume our study of shapes and angles in Geometry, which includes learning how to use a protractor. Learners will then have the opportunity to artistically identify and illustrate geometric designs as a reward for their effort on the assessment. The class will also have an opportunity to develop their understanding of measuring volume using manipulative cubes, using the formula Length X Width X Height.
