math 5 Updates
5th Grade continues to develop their understanding of Algebra by using the Order of Operations, (PEMDAS). Learners will have choices in creating their own multi-step expressions in the format of word problems. As a class, we will brainstorm a list of possible real life situations and will begin to write short story problems involving multiple operations with math symbols (e.g. Parenthesis). For example, “There were 10 boys and 8 girls going to the ice cream shop. They each got 2 scoops of ice cream. Unfortunately, 5 scoops fell on the ground. How many scoops of ice cream did the boys and girls get to enjoy?” The expression for that situation would look like (10 +8) X 2 – 5 = 31 scoops. Later in the week, to gain more practice, learners will use expressions to solve word problems related to situations involving Harry Potter. The week will culminate with an exit ticket quiz where learners will need to write the expression for a given situation.

5th Grade is beginning the next unit on Algebra, Functions, and Expressions. We will utilize the PEMDAS acronym to help solve problems involving Order of Operations. Learners will apply their understanding of using PEMDAS to solving complex problems, as well as being able to correct already completed problems that have errors. A video we will use to support instruction can be viewed here: https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/7579-represent-a-real-world-situation-as-a-numerical-expression#fndtn-lesson
On Wednesday, Learners will be miss our Math class due to their field trip to the Oakland Symphony. The week will end by learners applying their knowledge of solving basic algebraic functions to creating math expressions based on real life situations. This coming week the 5th grade is concluding the unit on multiplication and division. Learners will continue developing and practicing their sense of numbers by applying problem-solving strategies to real life situations, which will include graphs, charts, and word problems. Our next unit is Algebra, Functions, and Expressions. The first concept will be "Order of Operations", that will focus on understanding and using the acronym PEMDAS. This is a critical process for not just working with algebraic expressions, but also to solving math problems involving multiple operations. Learners will also take a Benchmark assessment in Math and all of their classes this week to assess concepts taught thus far.
Our 5th grade class continues to practice multiplication, that will build connections to division. This week we will conduct a literature-based project, using the book Esio Trot by Roald Dahl. Learners will track patterns from the book and chart their results. We will also have the opportunity to solve open-ended performance tasks to demonstrate deeper understanding of these math concepts.
