Learners will learn and practice the box method for multiplication. They continue to work on solving multi-step problems, working with decimals and practicing the multiplication algorithm. They are continuing to assess using multiple methods to show what they know. Water logs are due this week on 9/27.
A multiplication algorithm is an algorithm (or method) to multiply two numbers. Depending on the size of the numbers, different algorithms are in use. Efficient multiplication algorithms have existed since the advent of the decimal system. Box Method for Multiplication

Fifth graders have been working with decimals. Most commonly adults use decimals with money. Learners have been creating restaurant menus and practicing taking orders from other learners. Specifically we are practicing 1. Lining up decimals correctly. 2. Adding and regrouping numbers if necessary. 3. Finding change. Also, we've been learning the multiplication algorithm used to solve multiplication problems and practicing this skill. Water logs were also sent home on Wednesday and are DUE in class on 9/27.
You can help at home by practicing using real money with learners (adding, subtracting, making change). Decimal Activities for Home practice. Fifth graders are learning about place value patterns. We took notes about place value patterns and decimals. We practiced solving multi-step problems using the CUBES strategy. Our focus is on the "B" in CUBES which stands for boxing the key words. Learners practice recognizing key math words that help them solve problems. We are working with much larger numbers to solve problems now. For example: 3,983,652.211. Learners continue to practice academic language. We say 5 and 5 tenths instead of 5.5 (five point five). You can help at home by modeling this academic language with your student. Learners should be set up on Prodigy and actively working to build skills. If they are allowed screen time at home please encourage them to log on to Prodigy OR complete skill based practice from our Facilitator Websites. You can find "teacher approved" math gaming sites under the "educational links" tab.
Fifth graders did a great job this week! We are learning how to manipulate decimals. We are practicing lining up decimals in order to compare their values. We completed a baseball decimal task and tried to solve decimal word problems in a Round Robin style game. We also had fun playing decimal battleship. You can practice using decimals at home by using correct academic language about decimals. Practice reading decimals correctly. For example, 3.57 = 3 and 57 hundredths. The decimal is never called a "point." 4.50 can be read as 4 and 5 tenths or 4 and 50 hundredths.
Online Math Games This week we discussed the "Power of 10" in place value. We created math art showing the pattern in place value. From the right to left each place changes the value x 10. We practiced building large numbers with dial cards. We reviewed place value from last year such as expanded form. We began learning about decimal place value- tenths, hundredths, thousandths = 1/10, 1/100, 1/1000. For example, 5.50 can also be written as 5 and 5 tenths.
