Fifth graders will really delve into their Algebra and Functions Unit. The goal is for learners to be able towrite simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation "add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2" as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
Online practice can be found under the supplemental links tab.

5th graders have been reviewing multi-step word problems, division and multi-digit multiplication. We are now moving into Unit 3- Algebra, Functions and Expressions. Learners have been focusing on expressions and equations. They have also been working with variables. We are very impressed with their knowledge and retention!
Fifth graders are working on review of single digit and multi-digit multiplication as well as single-digit and multi-digit division. Fifth graders MUST master multiplication facts up to 12 this year to be successful in 6th grade. They can create flash cards, work on Khan Academy or other gaming sites etc to internalize their facts. Use a multiplication chart to their advantage.

Learners watched a water conservation video and practiced their division and multiplication skills. We are also working toward understanding equations and expressions. Learners have been introduced to variables.
