Learners will utilize an opinion writing checklist to guide their revisions.

This week learners will begin Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) testing this week. It is extremely important your learner gets a good night sleep and eats breakfast during testing week. The school will be providing additional snacks but please pack your learner's snack as normal. This will help set them up for success during testing. In addition, learners may bring their own headphones if they'd like. Please label these with their last name. Thanks for all you do!
Additionally, learners will be introduced to their next interdisciplinary project. The highly anticipated food truck project will begin with a gallery walk activity in which learners make observations about a variety of food trucks. Learners will then review the foundations of opinion writing and apply their opinion writing skills to writing a brief persuasive piece about a food truck. Learners will also review descriptive writing as they write about food trucks and their various cuisines using the five senses. This work is in preparation for learners to design their own food truck and ultimately write a persuasive piece about their mobile restaurant. Learners will brainstorm ideas for their own food truck, selecting a type of cuisine, a possible theme, and crafting their food trucks back story. We will also begin reading The Lemonade War as a whole class. Welcome back! This week, learners will continue working on their state government project. Learners will wrap up their first draft writing, and engage in the editing and revising process while they type a final draft of their informational state brochure.
Learners will also familiarize themselves with the Smarter Balanced Assessment through practice ELA tests. These practice assessments are not scored, and are used to help learners understand the testing format and tools that are available to them. This week learners will begin their state government project. Their new informational writing piece, a state brochure, will be focusing on the following driving question: How can you create a state government that is fair and protects its citizens’ rights? Learners will create a brochure that outlines the state’s leaders, type of government, important laws, and landmarks. This week they will learn about various elements of a state government (flag, leaders, jobs, landmarks, and laws) as they plan and draft out the brochure for their own state government.
This week, learners will work on revising and editing their informational piece on the topic of their choice. Learners will engage in mini lessons on writing a strong conclusion, using self-editing and peer feedback to pinpoint and clear up confusing parts of their writing, and using text features to teach the reader about the subject. At the end of the week, we will have a sharing party between the third grade classes where learners will share their writing with a peer from the other class.
This week we will begin a new writing unit in which learners will begin a new informational writing piece about a subject of their choice. Learners will explore nonfiction mentor texts and gather information about nonfiction writing that will guide their own writing pieces. Learners will then choose a topic and plan out their subtopics using a web. After the pre-writing planning, learners will begin drafting their informational writing pieces. Writers' Workshop mini lessons throughout the week will focus on informational writing introductions, facts, and expert words.
