3rd Grade humanities
This week learner will continue to draft an opinion piece focusing on the following question: Should people be allowed to build on land that is sacred to indigenous peoples?
Writers will work on crafting a piece that hooks the reader's attention, clearly conveys their opinion, and includes supporting reasons and evidence from the articles we have read. Mini lessons this week will focus on organization, using transitional phrases, and writing a strong conclusion/clinching statement. We will also revisit the opinion writing checklist, which learners will utilize to guide the development and revision of their writing.

This week, learners will continue their investigation of indigenous peoples/Ohlone land rights by taking notes on articles that convey different perspectives of building structures on the West Berkeley shellmound. site. Then, learners will consider the information they have learned and the perspectives they have heard, and begin constructing their own opinion of indigenous peoples' land rights. Learners will develop an opinion piece draft on this topic that hooks the reader's attention, clearly conveys their opinion, and includes supporting reasons and evidence from the articles we have read.
Mini lessons this week will focus on reviewing strategies for writing a strong lead and opinion/thesis statement. We will also revisit the opinion writing checklist, which learners will utilize to guide the development and revision of their writing. This week, learners will finish their final drafts of their Best Part of Me opinion writing. On Tuesday, our focus will return to social studies as learners begin reading articles about the Ohlone peoples and the impact of local construction projects on Ohlone land (Emeryville and West Berkeley Shellmounds). Learners will take notes on these articles, identifying key facts and examining the variety of perspectives involved. This work will prepare learners to write an opinion piece next week. |
