This week, learners will continue writing their personal memoir drafts. We will specifically focus on the falling action and conclusion of their narrative stories. Learners will also review different ways to write a strong, final statement in their story.
Learners will then begin typing their personal memoir final drafts the second half of the week. Each day, we will have a mini lesson that focuses on one aspect of writing that learners can strengthen during the editing and revision process of their final draft. This week, mini lessons will encompass the idea of "show, don't tell" and word choice. Learners will practice using descriptive language to show a reader what happened, instead of simply telling them, With word choice, learners will consider how they can use different/higher level vocabulary to make their writing stronger and more engaging for the reader. This week, third graders will begin writing their narrative piece. They will focus on including a hook, rising action, a climax, and ending with a conclusion. They will use one of their important events from last week as well as their plot outline. Going through this process will be a review from the beginning of the year where they wrote a fictional narrative of their choice. It will be great to see their growth in writing and compare narratives. They will also watch more biographies about influential people and learn how their lives shaped America's history.
Welcome back! For our next writing unit, learners will return to narrative writing. This will align with learners' Trimester 2 autobiography interdisciplinary project. This week, we will review narrative story structure (hook/introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, conclusion) in relation to true stories. Learners will read short written biographies and watch biographical clips and outline the main events of these stories on a graphic organizer. They will utilize this same organier when they begin planning/outling their own autobiographical narrative piece next week.
Learners will then brainstorm at least five important events in their lives, and briefly describe them. Learners will choose one of these events, and practice turning a "small moment" into a detailed story. One or more of these events will also be used in their autobiographical writing. |
