3rd Grade humanities
Writing: Learners will apply their knowledge and opinion writing skills for their original opinion piece responding to the prompt: What would be the best field trip for 3rd grade to go on? Use specific reasons and facts to convince your facilitator. This week, learners will engage in the pre-writing process, including a brainstorm and research. Learners will make pro/con lists for their top three field trip choices, decide on one, and research on that field trip activity/location. Learners will utilize the information from their research to support their argument and reasons when they begin writing their drafts next week.
Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit on the Ohlone people this week. Learners will practice notetaking and reflect on the impact of the Ohlone people in Alameda's history.

Writing: Learners will continue to expand their opinion writing by adding specific reasons and details that support their opinion statements. Learners will utilize opinion sentence starters from last week to respond verbally and in writing to opinion questions about a book that is read aloud, and begin considering specific reasons that support their opinion.
Later in the week, learners will construct pro/con charts for a variety of topics using their opinion and background knowledge on each topic. Learners will then further explore the topic "Should kids be allowed to eat candy?" through and informational video and article, and add specific facts to their pro/con chart. Learners will utilize this information and their opinion sentence starters to write a paragraph about this topic where they clearly state their opinion and supporting reasons and facts. Social Studies: Learners will continue to explore the lives of the Ohlone people. This week, we will focus on the traditions and perspectives of Ohlone people today. Writing: This week, learners will engage in the final steps of the writing process for their informational animal essays. We will review the rubric that will be used to grade this writing piece. Then, learners will self-edit and have a peer edit their drafts for organization, ideas, and content, as well as grammar. Learners will incorporate these revisions and suggestions into their final drafts, which they will type in Google Docs. These final writing pieces will be published and be displayed with the science and math components of their interdisciplinary project later this year at Expo Night.
