3rd Grade humanities
This week, learners will continue building and practicing skills to strengthen their opinion writing. Learners will review ways to catch a readers attention: tell a story/anecdote, ask a question, introduce the setting, give a fact, or use an exciting word or sentence. Learners will look through their Roots Reading books to see which types of attention catchers the authors use, and then will practice creating their own attention catchers on given topics. Learners will build posters with examples for each type of attention catcher as reference throughout our opinion writing unit, and beyond!
Learners will also explore how writers organize opinion writing with an argument and supporting reasons/evidence. Learners will read opinion articles from Newsela, and organize the article's information in a graphic organizer. Learners will begin exploring state historical landmarks in Alameda County for our social studies unit on Alameda history. Learners will choose one historical landmark and begin researching about it for their next project, in which they will write a persuasive letter about why it is important to preserve that landmark as a piece of history.

We will begin a new unit on opinion writing. This week, learners will reflect on why it is important to share their opinion, and topics they have strong opinions about. Also, learners will discuss the difference between fact and opinion, and engage in activities that will help them learn to identify fact vs. opinion.
Learners will practice making opinion statements using sentence starters, such as "In my opinion," "I think," and "I strongly believe," Learners will be given a topic, and will develop opinion statements that clearly convey their opinion. Then, learners will begin adding reasons that support their opinion. On Thursday, we are excited to welcome two guest speakers from the Alameda Sun who will discuss how they work to preserve Alameda. This will introduce learners to our next social studies unit on local history. This week, we will wrap up our social studies unit on the Ohlone peoples.
