This week, learners do final revisions and finish typing the finals drafts of their informational animal essays in Google Docs. We will have a publishing party on Friday to celebrate learners' hard work and accomplishments for this writing piece!
We will also wrap up our social studies unit on the Ohlone peoples by looking at how Ohlone culture is preserved and celebrated today by people with Ohlone heritage.

This week, learners will finish writing their informational animal essays drafts for their Trimester 1 biomimicry project. Learners will then engage in peer editing, specifically checking for punctuation and capitalization, using the informational writing rubric to guide the editing process. Learners will begin typing their finals drafts in Google Docs near the end of the week.
We will continue our social studies unit on the Ohlone peoples. This week, we will focus on how the Ohlone peoples adapted to the natural environment. This week learners will wrap up their animal research and begin writing their informational essay drafts for their Trimester 1 biomimicry project. Lessons will specifically focus on writing a strong introduction that catches the reader's attention and clearly conveys the topic and main ideas of the essay, and grouping similar information into paragraphs, We will also go over the informational writing rubric in order for learners to understand expectations for their writing, and encourage learners to challenge themselves to push their writing further.
This week, learners will dive into the humanities component of their Trimester 1 biomimicry project. Each learner will research their animal's habitat, physical description, prey and predators, and adaptations using online sources and informational books. Learners will use a graphic organizer to guide their research, and help organize information to prepare them for draft writing of their informational essay, which we will begin next week.
We will continue our study of the Ohlone people. This week, we will focus on the Ohlone peoples' connection to nature and the land on which they lived. Learners will have a publishing party to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments on their original narrative writing stories! Learners will share their writing by rotating around the room to read their peers' writing and give feedback. Then, the class will enjoy some light snacks!
We will transition into our next unit of writing: informational writing. Learners' next writing piece will align with their Trimester 1 animal adaptations project. This week, learners will read sample informational articles on animals to explore how the main idea and supporting details are organized in informational writing. Then, learners will search through the informational animal books in our classroom to find books that contain information on the animal that they will be researching for their project. (They will choose their animal in science). Finally, we will continue our study of the Ohlone people. This week, we will focus on how Ohlone villages and tribes. |
