3rd Grade humanities
Writing: After a week of planning and outlining, learners will begin their informational essay rough drafts! Learners have been excited to learn more about their animals in a creative way and have been practicing this month's principle, Organization, by learning how organize their information into a cohesive piece.
Each day, learners will be focusing on a different aspect of their project (introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion). Before starting their draft writing, we will review the rubric that will be used for this informational writing piece, which is the humanities component of their Trimester 1 Interdisciplinary Project.. Learners will use this rubric for peer editing at the beginning of next week as well. If you have time, ask your learner about their project! They have some great ideas and have been pushing their writing further and further each day. Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will continue our introduction to the Ohlone people, as well as tying the ways the Ohlone adapted to their environment into learners' studies of animal adaptations in science.

Writing: This week, learners will be working on the beginnings of their informational essays. This informational essay is part of their first collaborative interdisciplinary project with science and mathematics. They will be using the internet to complete comprehensive research detailing everything from basic traits, habitat and adaptations to the intricate ways humans interact with them.
We will then be transferring and organizing this information into an outline to prepare them for their essay. Some of the topics we will be discussing in informational writing include introduction/attention getters, main points/ supporting details and conclusion/clinching statement. Social Studies: In social studies this week, learners will be given an introduction to the Ohlone people, as well as tying the ways the Ohlone adapted to their environment into learners' studies of animal adaptations in science. Writing: This week, learners will have a writing party to celebrate the completion of their original narrative stories! Learners will have the opportunity to share their story, read their peers' stories, and provide feedback.
We will begin our informational writing unit this week. Learners will apply their knowledge of narrative writing structure (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion) to informational writing and begin exploring how they can convey information in ways that are engaging to the reader. This will prepare learners for writing an informational piece for their Trimester 1 Interdisciplinary Project on animal adaptations. Learners will also have their first benchmark, which will assess their understanding of narrative writing concepts covered in class thus far. Reading: Learners will look at the structure of informational writing examples and reflect on how each writer conveys the main topic of the piece and groups information. Writing: This week, learners will begin their original narrative writing stories! Over the past few weeks, learners have been focusing on the individual aspects of a story and will now be harnessing this collective knowledge into a final piece. Since this is their first writing, we will be taking a step-by-step approach, focusing on a different part of their story each day. We will be breaking it down into attention catchers and introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and finally resolution. There will also be mini-lessons on each concept before beginning writing each day.
Learners will also continue to review the narrative writing rubric to become familiar with specific expectations for their writing and understand how their narrative writing with be graded. The rubric is posted under "Useful Information". Reading: Learners will utilize their understanding of narrative writing elements and story structure in identifying characters, settings, problem, plot/main ideas, theme in short Native American myths and fables. They may also use these stories as inspiration for the stories they are writing in class. |
