We have decided to shift learners' opinion writing pieces from Alameda landmarks to a field trip location of their choice. Learners wrapped up their reseach on Alameda historical landmarks by creating an informational card for each landmark, and building a timeline that is displayed in the classroom.
We will continue as planned with the opinion writing process, and learners will argue why our class should go on a field trip to a location of their choosing. Last week, learners researched their field trip location, and began writing their opinion piece draft. This week. learners will continue developing their draft with specific reasons and details that support their opinion statement, and a strong conclusion that wraps up their writing and calls the reader to action. Learners will then engage in the peer editing process, and begin typing their final drafts in Google Docs. Last week, each learner choose one California historical landmark in Alameda County. This week, learners will research their historical landmarks online, and take notes in a graphic organizer on when their site became a landmark, why it is important in the history of Alameda County, and a descroption of the historical site.
Learners will utilize this information for on opinion writing piece in which they will argue why it is important to preserve their historical landmark. Learners will begin writing a draft of their opinion piece at the end of the this week. Learners will develop an introductory paragraph by applying skills they have gain from practice with attention catchers and opinioin statement sentence starters.
