math 4 Updates
For the remainder of the school year we will be reviewing the most challenging math concepts for learners. We will be reviewing multiplying, adding, and subtracting decimals, improper fractions and mixed numbers, and equivalent fractions.
You can help at home by encouraging your learner to build math fact fluency by going on Reflex math as well as challenging them to come up with equivalent fractions. Review for equivalent fractions Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Fourth graders have been practicing multiplying whole numbers by fractions. We began by writing down the rules to multiplying whole numbers- for example, 1. a product can be found by using repeated addition and 2. if factors are reversed we still get the same product (commutative property). Then we applied what we know about multiplication to multiplying fractions. The same works when we multiply a whole number by a fraction. We are also practicing decomposing fractions and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.
Decomposing Fractions Learners will be working on their Trimester 3 Gold Rush Project. In math they are exploring and comparing Gold Rush prices to 2018 prices. We will be creating our own budget through multiplication and division of decimals as we compare prices.
Fourth grade begins testing this week. We will continue to review concepts learned throughout the year.
Fourth graders jumps into the world of fractions: equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions. We are using models, pictures, and number lines to show understanding of fractions. We also talking about converting fractions to decimals and angles and line review.
My favorite mixed number video: Click Here Fourth grade learners are learning how to decompose fractions. We are learning about improper fractions and mixed numbers and how to show these on tape diagrams and number lines. Learners are learning how to manipulate fractions and break them apart to show their understanding of what fractions represent.
Pictures, models, number lines and tape diagrams are the best ways to show student understanding of fractions. They especially help to show improper and mixed number fractions. A common mistake learners make is forgetting the denominator is ALWAYS the amount of total pieces no matter how large the numerator. Our focus this week is on equivalent fractions. We will be comparing fractions using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. We are also allowing learners to draw models and number lines to represent fractions. Fourth graders need to draw upon their prior knowledge of fractions.
Equivalent Fractions- Equivalent fractions are different fractions that name the same number. Let's look at some more examples of equivalent fractions. Example 2. Two-thirds is equivalent to four-sixths. *Draw two stacking numberlines to help you compare fractions. Use a ruler to determine if the fractions are equal OR equivalent. Remember to draw your "tick" marks on the numberline as equal parts just as you do for a fraction model. Learners are reviewing fractions. We reviewed what we learned last year about fractions and we will be exploring equivalent fractions. We are also developing an understanding of fractional models and fractions on the numberline. Learners will also learn about the types of angles.
Fourth graders are testing their knowledge about area and perimeter this week. They are beginning their Unit on fractions. Specifically learners will review fractions and learn about equivalent fractions. We are also reviewing how to solve multi-step problems.
Fourth graders will complete Benchmark assessments this week. They will also begin practice for state assessments. Learners are focusing on the format of the online assessment, NOT the content. Also, we continue to practice area and perimeter in class. You can practice at home using the links below.
