Learners are beginning to focus on decimal place value. Our goal is to be able to discuss numbers to the right of the decimal using the word tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Learners should also understand the tenths place equals 1/10, the hundredths equals 1/100 and thousandths place equals 1/1000. We will practice representing decimals on the numberline. Learners will understand how decimal place value is relevant when using money. A Spring Break practice packet will go home. This is optional enrichment for our fourth graders.

Fourth graders continue adding and subtracting fractions. Learners are experiencing how to manipulate fractions. For example, adding whole numbers to fractions, pulling fractions apart (decomposing) and multiplying fractions. Learners can also practice finding the least common denominator and practicing their multiplication and division facts will help them build this skill.
Learners continue to explore fractions this week. After comparing and ordering fractions, we start adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. Learners will also add and subtract mixed numbers and "improper" fractions- fractions greater than one. As we add and subtract, learners are using number lines, models, and strategies of addition and subtraction.
