Fourth grade learners will be playing games and building skills surrounding addition and subtraction. We are really focusing on solving multi-step problems and interpreting word problems using the CUBE strategy and regrouping. We have introduced and reviewed academic vocabulary for fourth graders including various words for addition and subtraction.

Fourth graders begin Unit 2 with a focus on addition and subtraction. This week we will also practice multi-step word problems, including problems where remainders will be presented. We will review regrouping and adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers.
Please also work regularly on Reflex Math in order to build your learner's math fact fluency. Ideally your learner will work 3-4 times a week on this program. Concentrate on the green circle in the upper right hand corner turning completely green and do not encourage your learner to complete "marathon" sessions. A little goes a long way. https://www.reflexmath.com/ Fourth graders continue rounding practice with a focus on manipulating numbers. They practice comparing and estimating using rounding. Fourth graders also work to evaluate large numbers while making a number line and placing the numbers on the number line correctly. We will also begin a detective project involving group work that uses real world application of rounding and place value (expanded notation, standard form, word form etc). Here learners will buy detective gear and solve mysteries.
Fourth graders will continue learning about rounding- including estimation and comparing numbers. We have introduced a number line and "Benchmark" numbers in order for fourth graders to compare 4 digit numbers easily. We continue to work with number lines.. Learners also will complete writing their number riddles they began last week- with an emphasis on precise academic language.
