math 4 Updates
Learners practice estimating sums. They continue working to regroup numbers when adding and subtracting. We also call this composing and decomposing numbers. For example, when adding the numbers 45 and 26 you end up with "too much" in the ones place. Learners can not have more than one digit in the ones place so they break apart eleven (5 + 6) into 10 and 1. The one stays in the ones place and the 10 is "regrouped" to the tens place. Learners are also learning how to create equations.

Fourth graders are exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction:
subtraction. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/addition-subtraction/relate-add-and-sub.htm We are practicing regrouping, decomposing and recomposing numbers. We also refreshed our brains by playing Place Value Jeopardy. Learners are beginning to understand the relationship between place value and regrouping. We are prepping learners to begin our new skill building program called Reflex Math. Stay tuned for more information. Fourth graders practiced rounding and using place value charts. We reviewed the CUBES strategy for problem-solving. We did tons of word problem practice in our notebooks. We are specifically working on "boxing the key words" and "underlining the question." To help at home ask your students to help you problem solve and practice active listening. When completing word problems you can practice how to know what the question is asking. We also completed a performance task this year.
We completed our Atlas comparing project where we compared populations in countries having over a million people. We are learning how to explain place value using academic language. We practiced expanded form, standard form and word form. Learning how to manipulate and write numbers helps with comprehension. We completed a place value scavenger hunt and explored our school and class websites. The class website has many educational links learners can use to practice skills when they are home.
Rounding Practice Coloring Sheets This week fourth graders review place value. We practiced writing number forms. For example standard form, number form and expanded form. We are exploring the essential question: Why is it important to understand place value and how do we use place value in the real-world. For example, we began a group project where we used children's atlas to compare country populations over a million on various continents. We also discussed and explored the idea of a million. How large is a million? Lastly, we worked to build numbers using math manipulatives such as arrow cards, base ten blocks and dial cards.
