math 4 Updates
4th grade is beginning a new unit on patterns and relationships. We will begin our study using input and output tables. To complete a table, learners must follow a rule, such as add 3 or subtract 2. Learners will be able to use letters as variables for unknown quantities. You can help recognize patterns in daily life if your child goes shopping and notices prices. There may be patterns in price such as small, medium, and large sizes of certain products may increase in a numerical pattern. This is a video we will use to introduce the concept of following numerical rules.

4th Graders are continuing their practice with long division, which gets more rigorous with problems that will have 3-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors. After the division assessment, learners will start a new unit on Patterns and Functions, the last standard for 4th grade Algebra. We will follow rule patterns such as add 3 or subtract 4 to continue numerical patterns. Learners will learn how to use "T" charts to calculate and organize ordered, X and Y pairs as variables for unknown quantities. You can help recognize patterns in daily life, like when you and your child shop together, by pointing out price changes with larger quantities.. For instance: one box of cookies costs $2 but 2 boxes only cost $3.50. This illustrates how when buying two boxes, one box is discounted and costs $1.75, which is $0.25 cheaper. This is where learning can really shine!
4th grade will begin the week with a closer study of remainders. We will use the book Remainder of One to reinforce division and remainders in real life situations. Learners will also analyze word problems and determine whether the remainder should round up or round down, given the circumstance. With continued practice, Learners are getting more fluent using the algorithm for long division. We will continue to focus on long division using 2 or 3 digit dividends.
4th grade is focusing on division this week. We are applying what we know about multiplication facts, and fact families, to division facts. Long division will be a new and challenging task. To successfully use long division, learners must be able to multiply and subtract as well. Vocabulary that will be important to discuss includes divisor, dividend, and quotient. The steps are: 1) Divide, 2) Multiply, 3) Subtract, 4) Bring down, 5) Repeat, and 6) Check. You can help your child bring division into daily life by acknowledging when you are sharing things equally like food, chores or time. The week will focus on mastering 1 digit divisors with 2 or 3 digit dividends.
