math 4 Updates
Fourth grade learners will complete their Unit 2 assessment this week and are working on their interdisciplinary project. In math we are working to write realistic story problems based on some of the science observations. For example, calculating waste reduction. We have also been focusing on multiplying multi-digit numbers using the partial products algorithm.

Fourth Grade learners have completed Unit 2. We move into Unit 3- Multiplication and Division. Here we will practice using multiplication equations as comparisons. We will move to multiplication and division word problems. We will begin representing unknown numbers with a symbol. We will also be drawing pictures to represent answers.
Why should I know my facts? Learning multiplication is an important foundation for learning different aspects of mathematics such as division, algebra, long multiplication, and even fractions. For students that don’t have a solid grasp of the times tables, they may find these other areas to be hard to understand as well. Lack of arithmetic skills makes it difficult for a child to keep up with class and this can cause them to fail and fall behind. Using a calculator is not going to teach your child math and sometimes there just aren’t 30 seconds to pull out a calculator and figure out a problem. *This is one of the few math areas where we recommend drill and practice to learn our multiplication facts. Learners who "get the green light" in Reflex 3 times a week are on their way to math fact fluency! Fourth grade learners continue their focus on regrouping with large numbers. This includes both addition and subtraction. We also are creating our own multi-step word problems with a focus on boxing the key words. Learning this strategy will help learners identify crucial elements of a word problem. Last week they brainstormed a key word list and they came up with great ideas. We will also prep for our interdisciplinary project and the Nea Ninja Market (every Thursday after school). Lastly, we are excited to make "array" cities the following week as our introduction to multiplication.
Fourth grade learners continue their unit on Addition and Subtraction. We will review our Benchmark assessments with a focus on multi-digit addition and subtraction and place value. This week we launch the Nea Ninja Market. We will work on advertising and ordering. Learners will take turns staying after school (alternate with Ms. Rebecca and Ms. Ezell's class) and add and subtract prices by making change for customers at the market. Also, We are developing our own word problems with a focus on using the CUBES strategy.
C- Circle the numbers U- Underline the question B- Box the key words (Learners need more help with this step) E- Evaluate and Draw a picture S- Solve and Check |
