math 4 Updates
This week the 4th grade will continue our practice of adding and subtracting numbers that require regrouping. Then we will shift our focus to working with word problems to build on these math operations. This will facilitate cross-curricular learning; where learners will use their language skills to create meaningful, real world problems that should be clear for any problem solver to understand. The opportunity will allow learners to apply their understanding of math facts through creative, fun expressions.

4th grade will begin a unit that will focus on addition and subtraction. Learners will explore regrouping using hands-on manipulatives to support the basic algorithm. We will begin by working with numbers that include up to 3-digits. Learners will also make real-life connections with these math operations by applying them to hypothetical situations like how to spend birthday money.

This week we will focus on writing numbers in standard and expanded forms. Learners will learn how to order numbers, from least to greatest or vice versa. We will practice identifying the value of a specific digit in a multi-digit number. Learners will develop these fundamental skills by applying them to real life situations, like using data tables to represent the information. Learning opportunities will include peer to peer collaboration, direct instruction, and math games to sharpen skills.
