math 4 Updates
4th Grade continues to gain mastery of multiplication, using multi-digit numbers. We have practiced two strategies for recognizing partial products; one method without regrouping and one with regrouping called the standard algorithm. Additionally, we are building connections to division by identifying corresponding fact families. We will also begin to learn two strategies for division. One is called “Partial Quotients” and the other strategy is long division, the more common method. The video linked below will support our understanding of partial quotients. https://www.schooltube.com/video/1e90cc35ac7e4e368ebd/Partial%20Quotient%20Division
Learners will also review and practice their knowledge of prime and composite numbers. The video linked below will support our learning on the topic. https://learnzillion.com/resources/72576-find-and-understand-factors-and-determine-if-a-number-is-a-multiple-of-a-given-number-for-whole-numbers-0-100-4-oa-b-4

4th Grade will deepen their understanding of double-digit multiplication through using two different partial product strategies. One strategy is described here: https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/6125-solve-2-by-2-digit-multiplication-problems-using-partial-products#fndtn-lesson The other is the standard algorithm for partial products that requires regrouping. This is most likely the "old fashioned" method you were taught when you were back in elementary school. Learners will also be provided learning opportunities to generate their own problems to develop these skills by playing instructional games with classmates. There will also be an exit ticket to assess the week’s lessons. It will be a problem asking Learners to multiply a 2 digit number with another 2 digit number that only uses the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 to create the largest possible product. The Spelling Week #4 Lists are located here: http://nealvrotations.weebly.com/4th-grade1/spelling-week-4. 4th grade continues to develop and practice math fluency using multiplication. Some vocabulary terms this week will include partial products, commutative property and factors. Practice will include using manipulatives and drawing models to illustrate examples of repeated addition. If you think your child is struggling with their basic math facts of addition and subtraction, please find some time to work with your child so that the transition into multiplication is smooth. Learners will also take a Benchmark assessment in Math and all of their classes next week to assess concepts taught thus far.
Our 4th grade class is nearing completion of a short unit on addition and subtraction. We will review regrouping skills with both operations. We will also prepare for the unit test by revisiting key vocabulary, while practicing how to answer in clear, well-written responses that include details and/or examples. Later in the week we will begin Unit 3 on Multiplication, with a literature-based project using the book 100 Angry Ants.
