math 4 Updates
4th Graders are becoming more familiar with numerical and geometric shaped patterns. In continuing their practice of numerical patterns, Learners will design a poster to illustrate Patterns. We have practiced solving/identifying numerical rules (functions), mainly using T-charts (or input/output tables), whose results/data can be graphed for visual reference. Learners will also complete an interdisciplinary project that ties to their Vermicomposting project in Science class. For this task, Learners will create a poster that graphically illustrates data collected about specific waste habits. Upon our return in January, we will continue our study of patterns and functions. During the winter break, please help maintain your Learner’s math sense by sharing meaningful dialogue about real life situations that incorporate mathematical reasoning, as well as having him/her regularly practice their math facts (with all four operations).
Key Math Terms: divisor, dividend, quotient, whole numbers, remainders (parts), factors, prime & composite numbers

4th Graders will review past topics at the beginning of the week to prepare for Benchmark #2. For this assessment Learners will demonstrate their ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and round to a certain place value. A heavier focus will be placed on multiplication and division, as these are major content standards for 4th grade. After completing Benchmark #2, we will then resume our study of patterns in algebra. Learners will have the opportunity to design a poster showing examples of patterns in shapes, numbers, and input/output tables. The class is really enjoying our study of patterns, feeling more successful and confident than other past topics. With the class progressing into more complex math involving multiple steps and/or operations, please assure your child is gaining mastery of all four operations; most especially with multi-digit multiplication and long division. If your child is struggling with their multiplication facts, this most likely causes them added difficulty when performing long division. At this point of the year, it is critical that Learners who are struggling with these basic operations dedicate some quality time to practice/master them.
