3rd Grade humanities
This week, learners will write the drafts of the opinion piece for their restaurant project in which they persuade people to come to their restaurant. In a graphic organizer, learners will create a brief history of their restaurant, and develop at least three reasons and supporting details to demonstrate why people should choose to eat at their restaurant. Learners will engage in mini lessons on writing a hook to catch the reader's attention, developing a strong thesis statement, and organizing their writing into paragraphs. At the end of the week, learners will begin typing the final drafts of their persuasive writing in Google Docs. These projects will be on display in our classroom during Expo Night next Wednesday, June 8.
We will continue reading The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davis in conjunction with our economics unit. Learners will explore how economic terms used in the book connect to their restaurant project.

This week, learners will begin the humanities component of their restaurant project! In a Google Doc, learners will format and type the restaurant menus they created in math. Learners will utilize their knowledge of inserting tables and pictures in Google Docs (from their state brochure project) to help format their menu information and ensure that food sections, prices, and pictures are well-organized. Learners will begin building background information about their restaurant (slogan, when/why it opened, what it looks like) in preparation for writing an opinion piece that persuades people to visit their restaurant.
We will continue reading The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davis in conjunction with our economics unit. Learners will explore how economic terms used in the book connect to their restaurant project. This week, learners will utilize the information they found about their company to write a short opinion piece persuading people to buy their company's products. We will review opinion statement sentence starters, how to support an opinion with specific evidence/details, and reiterating an opinion in a conclusion or concluding statement. We will also visit In-N-Out to learn firsthand how a business runs! Additionally, learners will have their final humanities benchmark this week.
We will continue reading The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davis in conjunction with our economics unit. We wrapped up our unit on government and are moving on to economics! This week, learners will explore how some Bay Area-based companies utilize human and natural resources to produce their goods. Learners will research one company's history, use of resources, and products, and use this information to craft a short persuasive piece about why people should (or should not) by the company's product(s). This will prepare learners for their upcoming interdisciplinary restaurant project, in which learners will create their own restaurant, menu, and prices.
