5th graders begin Unit 2- Multiplication and Division. This week we will play many games involving multiplication and division. Learners will practice manipulating numbers. We have a focus on academic language including words like algorithm, remainder, quotient, share, multiplied by, divided by and product. Learners will note take and practice regrouping.
This week 5th grades begins their Toys R Us Rounding Project. Here we will focus on extending our knowledge of rounding through real world application. Students are given a budget and asked to buy toys for a child who is moving to the United States. They will brainstorm ideas and use the Toys R Us website to create their own shopping list. From there learners will be asked to estimate the total cost of the items all while staying in budget. They will compare their estimated total to the actual total at the end of the project.
We are also continuing to practice decimal place value and rounding through warm-ups and worksheet practice. Your can practice comparing decimal numbers at home by using a number line. Most learners need assistance with setting up the number line correctly. This week we continue with our focus on decimal place value- for example, tenths, hundredths and thousandths. Learners continue practicing writing these values (.4 = 4/10, .05= 5/100 etc). This week we learn how to compare decimals by using a number line. We use symbols to show how numbers compare as well. The biggest focus for this week is learning how to draw and label number lines correctly in order to compare numbers with decimals.
