math 5 Updates
This week the 5th grade will continue to practice multiplication, as we begin division. Some of the key math terms we are learning include: factors, partial products, divisors, dividends and quotients. We will use a literature-based activity to explore word problems involving division. This cross-curricular lesson will allow learners to apply their understanding of fact families through creative, fun expressions.

5th grade will begin a unit on multiplication and division. One of our vocabulary words will be “factor.” Learners will explore factors of a number through factor trees, games, and drawing arrays. Another important vocabulary term and concept that will be introduced later in the week will be “partial products.” Learners will practice using a variety of methods to multiply double digit numbers.
Next week our 5th Graders will focus on the expanded form of numbers into the billions. Learners will learn how to read and use exponents, which will be applied to writing standard numbers in expanded notation. We will also review rounding numbers with different place values. While working in small, collaborative groups, learners will perform tasks from Marilyn Burns project-based learning curriculum to demonstrate their understanding of place value. The week will culminate with a formal assessment on Friday..
In 5th grade we are exploring place value into the billions place, as well as an introduction to the decimal places. This week we will focus on writing numbers in three forms: standard, expanded, and written. Learners will learn how order numbers, from least to greatest or vice versa. They will practice identifying the value of a specific digit in a multi-digit number. Learners will develop these fundamental skills by applying them to real life situations, like using data tables to represent the information. .Learning opportunities will include peer to peer collaboration, direct instruction, and math games to sharpen skills.
We will begin our class rotations this week. With that, I look forward to getting to know each learner as we begin exploring the world of numbers. We will be setting up personal math notebooks, which will become an ongoing portfolio of the year's work. Our first unit is Place Value. This will be a critical area that will serve as a foundation to the math lessons ahead.
