math 5 Updates
The 5th graders continue their conversion of measurement unit. We are completing read-world/relevant problems involving converting measurement. For example, if Jon ran a mile in 8 minutes and Sarah ran it in 540 seconds, who ran it faster? Or, if Jon filled his bucket with 4 liters of water and Sarah filled her bucket with 3,000 milliliters of water, who had more water? You can help at home by asking learners about the patterns within conversion. They are learning about root words as clues to unit meaning. Lastly, we will begin our review of fractions and classifying shapes.

Fifth grade is learning about conversion of measurements. Some of our new and reviewed vocabulary includes customary units, metric system, inch, feet, yard, ounce, ton, second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, millimeter, centimeter, meter, gram, kilogram, milliliter, and liter. They will be using all 4 basic operations when exploring these measurement concepts. (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). There are many real-life applications for this skill. You can help at home by noting when measurement happens naturally in your home. For example, distance driving and running.
The 5th graders continue working on their expo projects and will complete their final Benchmark assessment for the year. Wow! Great job 5th graders! We will also review order of operations with our learners and continue learning about measurement. Specifically we will work toward understanding conversion or measurement.
The 5th graders will begin their project for expo night. It is a culmination of all they have learned in math thus far. Learners create their own clocks with equations instead of whole numbers. For example, they will use their knowledge of order of operations to demonstrate their ability to perform algebraic functions. This is a project that turns out beautifully and we look forward to you seeing the final product on Expo Night.
The 5th graders begin a new unit on graphing. Their homework due Friday reflects our new objectives. Students will be learning about coordinate planes. They will learn how to graph points on a coordinate plane to solve real-world mathematical problems. We will also be learning how to make a line plot. You can help your learner at home by encouraging them to use academic math language when they speak about our new unit.
