math 5 Updates
5th grade will deepen their understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions this week. We explored how a single fraction is a representation of division last week. For example, ¾ is like saying 3 divided by 4. 3 is the dividend and 4 is the divisor. This week we will also apply vocabulary from multiplication to fractions this week, such as “product” meaning the answer to a multiplication problem. This is a video that will support our learning. https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/6190-use-picture-models-to-divide-whole-numbers-leading-to-answers-in-the-form-of-mixed-numbers

Learners will continue work with fractions in our new unit that starts this week. Lessons will introduce multiple methods on how to multiply and divide fractions. Important vocabulary that will be covered in this 5 week unit includes: mixed number, improper fraction, dividend, divisor, quotient, numerator, and denominator
5th grade is reviewing and taking their Benchmark 3 assessment this week. Skills that will be assessed include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. We will review these skills through word problem applications. 4th grade is on a field trip on Thursday, leaving 3 days for math. On Friday we will return to our study of adding and subtracting mixed number fractions.
I hope you enjoyed seeing your child’s interdisciplinary projects at Expo Night! There will be an art project involving fractions that ties into Chinese New Year on Monday. Next week we will continue our study in addition and subtraction of fractions. Learners are creating word problems where adding or subtractions fractions occur in real life. We will use mixed numbers along with improper fractions in our calculations.
