math 5 Updates
Smarter balanced assessments resume this week. We are beginning to articulate place value of decimals and compare numbers based on their tenths and hundredths. Learners are really beginning to understand and notice the patterns between fractions, decimals and percents. They use long division to calculate the decimal from a fraction and then move the decimal place to the right to determine the percentage. It's been fun watching them understand this. You can practice at home by giving them small fractions to convert to decimals and percents. For example: 1/2, 1/4, 2/3, 1/5 etc.

This week we will continue working with fractions and applying what we know to real-world problems. We have been working to multiply whole numbers and fractions. We will continue this practice, using visual models to represent our solution. Also, we explore converting fractions to decimals and looking for patterns. We will play games involving conversion of fractions to decimals and even do some drill and practice on this topic. We are preparing for multiplying and dividing decimals.
