Math 3 Updates
We’re looking forward to seeing you at Expo night! 3rd graders are sharing important life events on their Timeline project. This is part of our new unit on Fractions. 3rd graders will be able to identify unit fractions and learn vocabulary like numerator, denominator, and whole number. They are beginning to understand that a unit fraction is more than zero but less than one. We will introduce the concept of equal fractions and compare fractions through our investigations.

3rd grade will begin their interdisciplinary family history Timeline Project. Learners have completed an interview sheet, documenting 5 major life events. We will use this information to create equal parts on a number line. This is our introduction to the new unit Fractions. This video will support our understanding of fractions. https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/7920-recognize-fractions-breaking-shapes-into-equal-parts
3rd grade will review their division skills Tuesday and Wednesday, and take the Division Assessment on Thursday. Learners may apply any division strategy to solve the problems. They know how to use repeated subtraction, circles and stars, fact families, draw pictures, and even long division strategies. They are thoroughly prepared for the division that will be come in 4th grade. A video that will reinforce the lessons may be viewed here. https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/5004-find-the-missing-quotient-in-a-division-problem Our next unit will be Fractions. This skill will help your child divide a timeline into 9 equal pieces for the upcoming interdisciplinary timeline project.
3rd Grade continues to investigate division. To build on their basic understanding of this fourth and final math operation, Learners will gain a deeper introduction to long division this week. Since division requires multiple steps that include: dividing, multiplying, subtracting, dropping the next number, and repeating these steps until finished, it is the most challenging of the four operations to grasp. And because long division is a critical algorithm for working with fractions, which is a fundamental part of higher-end math as well as daily life (e.g. percentages), it is imperative for Learners to understand this traditional process. As a class, we will slowly navigate into long division, concentrating on problems with whole quotients (no remainders). While Learners develop their understanding of long division through a variety of examples that includes solving creative word problems, review of the other three operations will be incorporated into our daily lessons. To support this comprehensive practice, Learners will have more opportunities to play math games with cards or dice. Please know this is an important time in each Learner’s math life and your assistance to ensure your child is ready can make the greatest difference. Thank you for your continued support!
Happy 2016! Aloha and welcome back!
3rd grade begins the new year by deepening their understanding of division. We will review division strategies and recall fact families to jumpstart our learning at the beginning of the week. Hopefully learners remember the skills practiced in December, but we will build in review to ensure a solid foundation. Strategies include: repeated subtraction without remainders -- taking away the divisor from the dividend until reaching zero, circles and stars -- make as many circles as the divisor and put one star in each circle until reaching the dividend total with a drawn picture -- illustrate people sharing resources, and fact families -- relate division to multiplication facts. |
