Math 3 Updates
Third graders are learning new vocabulary (see below)- We are practicing internalizing these words, using our word wall to help us explain math concepts and ideas. This unit focuses on regrouping and learning to manipulate and group numbers. We will also introduce a strategy to solve multi-step word problems. We are also beginning our Trimester Project on Place Value "in the wild" this week as well

Third graders begin Unit 2- Addition and Subtraction. This week we will preview academic language and continue note taking. Third graders will participate in many activities including manipulating numbers, estimating sums and adding cents to make a dollar. We will learn about "base 10 frames" and practice grouping numbers in preparation for our multiplication unit.
Third grade learners are practicing manipulating numbers. They take a 2-4 digit number and review how to add and subtract without the regular algorithm (using place value). We have a strong focus on placing numbers on a numberline. By doing this we hope learners will be able to recognize rounding visually.
Third graders continue practicing their rounding skills. We have introduced the idea of a "benchmark" number in order to compare two digit numbers on a numberline. Learners use rhymes to remember how to round and number lines to plot two digit numbers in order to determine whether to round up or down. We have introduced the terms estimation and comparing to the third graders. We will also take our unit assessment this week. Below is a great website where learners can practice their skills.
