Math 3 Updates
The 3rd grade will continue our practice of adding and subtracting numbers that require regrouping. We will also use the book Alexander Who Used To Be Rich On Sunday as a resource to connect their math skills to experiences in daily life. By creating and solving word problems, learners will apply literacy in math class this week. Learners will be given a menu of activity choices to demonstrate their knowledge and offer differentiation of math skills.

3rd grade will begin a unit that will focus on addition and subtraction. Learners will explore regrouping using hands-on manipulatives to support the basic algorithm. We will begin by using two or three-digit numbers. Later in the week, we will do a literature-based math activity using the book Alexander Who Used To Be Rich On Sunday.
Next week our 3rd Graders will continue to practice writing numbers in three basic formats: standard form, written form, and expanded form. Learners will also use a 1 - 100’s chart with various empty places to demonstrate their understanding of place value and sequencing. The week will culminate with a formal assessment on Friday.
In 3rd grade we are exploring place value into the hundred thousands place. This week we will focus on writing numbers in standard form. Learners will learn how to order numbers, from least to greatest or vice versa. They will practice identifying the value of a specific digit in a multi-digit number. Learners will develop these fundamental skills by applying them to real life situations, like using data tables to represent the information. Learning opportunities will include peer to peer collaboration, direct instruction, and math games to sharpen skills.
We will begin our class rotations this week. With that, I look forward to getting to know each learner as we begin exploring the world of numbers. We will be setting up personal math notebooks, which will become an ongoing portfolio of the year's work. Our first unit is Place Value. This will be a critical area that will serve as a foundation to the math lessons ahead.
