Math 3 Updates
3rd Graders are building their fluency of multiplication facts through use of a variety of strategies. This week Learners will use a multiplication chart to color corresponding multiples (up to 9) to recognize patterns. Learners will also fill in an empty multiplication chart to demonstrate their knowledge of single-digit facts through 9. We will then apply their basic understanding of multiplying numbers to word problems mid-week. Learners will develop their understanding of multiplication by understanding and solving word problems that highlight real life situations, while also have the opportunity to create their own problems. Our week will culminate in solving multiplication problems for an unknown number; not always for the product but also for one of the factors. For example, 6 X ? = 48. This video will support our learning this week. https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/6412-solve-word-problems-using-the-idea-of-equal-groups

3rd Grade will continue to practice and understand multiplication strategies, which will include: drawing pictures, using "circles and stars," drawing arrays, and using repeated addition. For example, if using the circles and stars strategy. solving 3 X 4 could look like three circles with four stars in each one. When using the array strategy, it would involve drawing a rectangle, with dimensions 3 across and 4 down. Or, it could look like 4 + 4 + 4= 12, if using repeated addition. We will work on fluency of multiplication facts through these strategies as well as beginning to learn simple multiplication facts. The week will progress into understanding word problems; specifically reading to identify the facts and the information needed to solve multiplication word problems.
3rd grade will begin a unit on multiplication. This will provide an opportunity to begin developing their math fluency of addition facts, using repeated addition as a strategy for multiplication. If you think your child is struggling with their basic math facts of addition and/or subtraction, please find some time to work with your child so that the transition into multiplication will be more smooth. Learners will take a Benchmark assessment in Math and all of their classes next week to assess concepts taught thus far.
In 3rd grade, our class is wrapping up the unit on addition and subtraction, with more regrouping practice. We will perform open-ended addition and subtraction tasks to further develop problem-solving skills. Learners will receive choices of activities to demonstrate their individual ability levels. The week will include a unit test and personal reflection of the lessons completed. We will prepare for the assessments by reviewing vocabulary, while practicing how to write clear responses that include details and/or examples.
