Math 3 Updates
We are beginning our Multiplication Unit. It is crucial our learners have a strong foundation in multiplication to be successful in math. We will explore multiplication with manipulatives (breaking into groups), on numberlines and in arrays and repeated addition. Our end goal is to be able to solve multi-step problems using the four operations. Learners will also begin their Trimester 1 Interdisciplinary project about Animal Adaptations.
Below are some strategies you can use at home to practice multiplication: Multiplication Strategies - drawing pictures, circles and stars, repeated addition, skip counting, etc. Multiplication Video

We are working to reinforce addition and subtraction skills with multi-digit numbers and beginning assessments for the end of our Addition/Subtraction Unit. We are really working to understand how addition and subtraction are related and to solidify their understanding of regrouping numbers.
Some games to reinforce skills: www.mathplayground.com/grade_2_games.html Learners work to become fluent in addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will introduce variables. Variables such as X, Y, and any other letter can be used as a variable in an equation. Third graders are were introduced to variables as a letter that represents an unknown quantity. They also created "varia-bats" in class to explore equations with variables. Learners are also working on the Reflex Math Program to become fluent in addition and subtraction facts up to 10. They can log on to this program from home. Their login is "neaninja32" and their password is their first and last initial followed by a 2-digit number.
