4th Grade Science Updates
We will begin the week with wrapping up our mock rock investigation by identifying the final components of the mock rocks. Next we will use some new tools and strategies to identify the mystery minerals we have in class. Learners will get a change to play a simulation game about discovering minerals around the world and using a variety of tests back at their lab to identify them. Then we will study weathering of rocks, with our focus first on physical weathering. We will simulate how rocks can be physically weathered in a variety of different ways.

This week we will kick off our Rocks and Minerals unit. We will first take a look at some different types of soils and use separation to learn more about each one’s components. Then we will study “mock rocks” and try to figure out their “ingredients”. We will compare how these are like real rocks and how they are not realistic.
This week we will be experimenting with light. We will observe it’s behavior, try to predict what it will do in a variety of situations, and experiment with refraction in water. We will also watch a video and read an article to “shed a little more light” on the subject : ) At the end of the week, learners will complete an exit ticket about light.
4th graders will be completing their circuit projects this week and then moving on to study light. We will look at how light travels and reflects using some hands-on investigating. We’ll see a video that further explains some of light’s properties. At the end of the week we will have an exit ticket about light.
