4th Grade Science Updates
This week we will be studying electromagnets. Learners will figure out how to build an electromagnet using just a nail, long wires, and a battery. We will read about how electricity can be produced using magnetism. Then learners will study how to increase the strength of an electromagent and graph the data they collect.

This week, 4th graders will review series and parallel circuits and write a memo as consultants explaining their reasoning for why series or parallel circuits should be installed in a building. On Tuesday, learners will read a summary article on series and parallel circuits and complete a short answer response sheet. On Wednesday, we’ll introduce the 2nd Trimester Interdisciplinary Project where learners will light up their mission that they designed in Math class.
This week we will continue working with different types of circuits. We will see that parallel circuits allow two bulbs to shine brightly. We will examine the difference between series and parallel circuits and even turn into electrons racing through human-sized circuits.
Fourth graders will continue their study of electricity by learning how to draw schematics. They’ll act as electrical engineers and electricians by working in partners to design circuit schematics and build what their partners drew. They’ll test conductors and insulators around the classroom, read an article about circuits, explore mystery circuit boards and begin building series circuits.
Happy New Year! Welcome back! Fourth graders will begin the electricity part of our Magnetism and Electricity unit. Learners will start this week with a demonstration of static electricity using balloons and rubbing them on learners’ heads to watch their hair stand up! They’ll also watch a video and read an article on static electricity. Learners will use their knowledge of static electricity to help them understand what is happening when they complete a circuit to light a bulb and make a motor run.
