This week, 4th graders will read about identifying minerals and complete a response sheet. They’ll look at the different minerals that make up granite and read a summary article about where rocks come from. They’ll play a game online where they get to be geologists in the field using their knowledge of rocks and minerals to identify them based on various tests we’ve learned in class. Later in the week, learners will do a reader’s theater on the rock cycle and discuss weathering.
4th graders will observe the results of their evaporation tests to see what minerals dissolved from the rocks they were observing last week. They’ll read an article on calcite and research the state rocks and minerals by making a class book. Later in the week, learners will be introduced to other methods that geologists use to identify minerals, such as streak, luster, cleavage and magnetism.
This week, we will continue to study our mineral samples, using the hardness test to identify them by name. We will learn more about Moh’s hardness scale and precious gems. We will make a bar graph of the class’ gemstones and begin to study a common mineral - calcite. We’ll look for it in various rocks using its chemical properties.
