This week, learners will wrap up their research and note-taking on the colonial era of California and the impact of the Spanish missions/missionaries on the lives of indigenous peoples. Then, learners will read an informational article that outlines how textbooks have changed since the early 1900s-today to more accurately reflect the plight of indigenous people during this period of California history. Learners will consider what steps the authors of the texts they have read could take to further convey a more accurate representation of indigenous peoples in preparation for developing their own informational writing piece on this topic.
Learners will engage with expository mentor texts to explore strategies and structures that writers use to organize and convey information to the reader. Learners will identify and build a list of these strategies, which they will utilize for their informational draft writing next week. This week, learners will continue reading informational texts about the California missions and their impact on the lives of indigenous peoples. As we have discussed in class, there are many inaccurate historical sources and resources that are falsely portraying the colonial era of California. We are asking learners to write an informational piece that accurately portrays the history of indigenous people during this era in order to preserve this history and make sure that future generations of Nea learners know what really happened. This week learners will do the research portion of the project, taking notes on articles, responding to questions, and integrating information from several sources.
