Learners will use a checklist to review their work and make sure they are producing their very best opinion writing. On Thursday we will have a publishing party to celebrate the authors finishing their work. Learners will also continue reading Esperanza Rising as a whole class.

This week, learners will engage in the editing and revising process as they work towards publishing their 4Rs persuasive letters. As learners type their final drafts in Google Docs, they will utilize a writing workshop checklist to help them push themselves to do their very best writing that is well organized and includes all the required elements and information. In mini lessons this week, learners will explore using convincing words and tone, and appropriate use of punctuation to edit run-on sentences.
We will continue reading Esperanza Rising as a class, and discussing key concepts, events, and socio-historical context through verbal discussions and a written comprehension exit ticket. This week, learners will have their first benchmark assessment. These are given once per trimester. Benchmarks allow facilitators to assess what skills and concepts in which learners demonstrate proficiency, and which areas need to be reviewed with small groups or retaught as a whole class. These opinion writing pieces are part of their first interdisciplinary project this year. Learners will utilize notes and data they have collected in science to write a draft of their persuasive letter to their family about how and why they should reduce food waste at home. Learners will begin by developing a strong thesis statement and specific supporting reasons, along with a "lead" that will hook the reader's attention in the introduction. They will then expand each reason into a paragraph and add supporting details and facts.
We will continue reading Esperanza Rising as a class. Learners will engage in class discussions and written responses to comprehension questions to deepen their understanding of the text and socio-historical context in which it is situated in California history. This week, learners will begin a new unit on opinion writing. Learners will take an opinion writing pre-assessment to help guide the facilitation of this unit and focus on specific skills/concepts that need to be reviewed and strengthened. Learners will have a refresher on ways to begin a strong opinion statement/thesis (In my opinion, I believe, I strongly feel, It is important that, etc) and utilize these sentence starters to craft thesis statements for given topics in a gallery walk.
Learners will choose one of the topics from the gallery walk and expand their thesis statement into a opinion piece. First, they will add specific reasons that support their opinion. After reviewing opinion writing leads (asking a question, explaining why the topic matters, telling a surprising fact, giving background information), learners will again return to their topic add a hook to their writing, and continue adding details and reasons that support their opinion. Learners will extend their understanding of the organizational structure of opinion pieces by reading a pro/con article and determining the thesis and main supporting reasons/details for each side. We will continue reading Esperanza Rising as a class and connecting trends, issues, and successes of historical and contemporary immigration to California. |
