SBA Testing will be starting this week (for real this time)! Please make sure your learner is getting plenty of rest and eats breakfast before coming to school.
On non-testing days, learners will continue working on their Gold Rush short stories. This week, learners will choose one of their three short stories to add detail/complete, revise, and share with their peers. Additionally, learners will engage in mini lessons on grammar. This week, we will focus on fragments and run-on sentences. We will continue reading By The Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman. Learners will utilize their background knowledge about the Gold Rush to dive deeper into the historical context of the book and engage in class discussions. SBA testing has been postponed for a week, so we will have a regular morning rotation schedule this week. We will wrap up our unit on the California Gold Rush this week! Learners will examine primary source documents, and use them as inspiration for writing short narrative stories. Learners will consider an interesting point of view in a depicted Gold Rush scene (for example: What would a story about the Gold Rush be like from a pick axe's point of view?), and a craft short narrative piece. Learners will write a story each day, and choose one piece to revise and share on Thursday.
Additionally, learners will engage in daily grammar mini lessons. This week, we will focus on end punctuation, capitalization, commas, fragments/run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement. These lessons will be integrated with their writing, and each day learners will focus on revising a specific aspect of their writing. We will continue reading By The Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman. Learners will utilize their background knowledge about the Gold Rush to dive deeper into the historical context of the book and engage in class discussions. SBA testing is here! First off, please ensure that your learner is getting plenty of rest and comes to school filled with delicious breakfast! Also, if you have not already sent headphones to school, please do so on Monday. Learners have been working hard to prepare and we know they will do wonderfully!
During our off-day, we will also be continuing our California Gold Rush curriculum. This week, learners will dive into the California's growing pains during and towards the end of the gold rush as well as Chinese immigration to the state. Welcome back from break! This week, learners will put the finish touches on their Gold Rush journals. Learners will review the narrative writing rubric, and use it to reflect on what they can improve in their writing. Mid-week, learners will have a publishing party to share and celebrate their hard work and accomplishments as writers!
Learners will continue to learn about the Gold Rush through primary accounts and historical documents. This week, we will dive deeper in the ways that discrimination was embedded in the Gold Rush through laws and lack of societal/governmental structure. Learners will read first hand accounts and examine artwork that encapsulates this social and political aspect of the Gold Rush. Learners will continue reading By The Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman, and utilizing their background knowledge on the Gold Rush to deepen their understanding of the historical context of the story. |
