4th grade humanities
This week learners will begin their Gold Rush unit! This is such a fun and engaging unit that 4th graders are sure to enjoy it. Our driving question will be:
What was life like for someone traveling to and living in California in the mid-1800s? Each learner will develop a realistic character who could have lived during the CA Gold Rush, and create a journal about their character’s journey to and life in CA during the Gold Rush on Google Slides. The journal will describe the individual’s journey on their chosen route, including why they chose that route, who they went with, their reason for going and difficulties they encounter on the journey. Then they will detail their experiences after arriving in CA and living in CA during the Gold Rush. We will also begin reading a new book titled By the Great Horn Spoon!.. By The Great Horn Spoon! is a children's novel by Sid Fleischman, published in 1963. The story takes place in the California Gold Rush. A twelve-year-old boy named Jack, who has lived with his Aunt Arabella since his parents died, heads to California to search for gold after Aunt Arabella loses all her money. During this reading, we will be discussing character description, making connections with historical information learned, learn new vocabulary, and strengthen their comprehension skills. Learners will also continue test prep to prepare for SBA testing the week of April 17th
