4th grade humanities
This week, learners will begin a new social studies unit on the European exploration and colonial history of California. Learners will engage in an inquiry investigation in which they explore primary source documents, historical fiction text excerpts, and informational passages to make connections about the relationship/effect of the Spanish missionaries/mission system and native peoples in the region. Learners will work in small groups to develop an understanding of the meaning of each document/text and draw conclusions about how the sources connect. Learners will engage in mini lessons on note taking strategies and making connections between texts.

This week learners will participate in a series of guided poetry translation activities from Poetry Inside Out. The focus will be on translating poetry from Spanish to English to coincide with the culmination of our study of Esperanza Rising. Both facilitators attended a Poetry Inside Out workshop over the summer and are looking forward to sharing this unique, powerful method of studying language and poetry. On Thursday, learners will revisit their Native American tribe booklets as they compare and contrast what they have learned about their Native American tribe with another learner’s tribe. Lastly, on Friday, learners will share their Native American tribe booklets with another class.
This week, we will investigate the questions: What was life like for native peoples before settlers arrived in California? How did diverse geography and climate affect native peoples? Each learner will explore one group of indigenous people, and create a booklet that teaches about the natural resources of the region in which their group lived, as well as their group's tools, religion, and beliefs.
We will wrap up reading Esperanza Rising as a whole class. |
