5th Grade humanities
This week, 5th grade learners will be beginning the research and note-taking for their Explorers of History project! Some of the specific note-taking skills we will review and introduce are how to site information, how to take basic and detailed notes, how to judge the relevancy and trustworthiness of a piece of writing and how to organize the information to get from their sources.
First, learners will begin by participating in activities, allowing them to imagine what the life of an explorer might be like. Then, learners will be given an overview of a variety of different explorers to get an idea about which mission in specific they would enjoy learning and writing about. Learners will then begin research on their specific explorer.

Writing: Learners have been working so hard on their research and informational writing! They are becoming experts in their topic of choice and have been combing through numerous resources to find answers to their driving questions. Learners' research has specifically focused on the history of their topic, a description/background, and three areas of focus they are interested in learning about within their general topic. Learners will continue working on (and hopefully finish!) their informational writing drafts in Google Docs this week. We will have mini-lessons on using linking words and writing a strong conclusion.
