SBA Testing will be starting this week (for real this time)! Please make sure your learner is getting plenty of rest and eats breakfast before coming to school.
On non-testing days, learners will continue working on their ghost stories. Learners will finish typing their drafts and participate in peer feedback. Learners will rotate around the classroom, and give others constructive, specific feedback about their story's strengths and things that could be improved. Learners will utilize this feedback to help them revise their writing. Additionally, learners will engage in mini lessons on grammar. This week, we will focus on fragments, run-on sentences, and frequently confused words. Learners will specifically focus on revising their ghost stories for fragments and run-on sentences, and correctly use at least 10 frequently confused words in their stories. We will continue reading The Fighting Ground by Avi. Learners will utilize their background knowledge about the Gold Rush to dive deeper into the historical context of the book and engage in class discussions. SBA testing has been postponed for a week, so we will have a regular morning rotation schedule this week. Learners will utilize their brainstorm and planning pages to write a draft of their ghost story this week! In their drafts, learners will decide how to incorporate a least one figure or aspect of the American Revolution into their story.
Additionally, learners will engage in daily grammar mini lessons. This week, we will focus on end punctuation, capitalization, commas, fragments/run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement. These lessons will be integrated with their writing, and each day learners will focus on revising a specific aspect of their writing. We will continue reading The Fighting Ground by Avi. Learners will utilize their background knowledge about the Gold Rush to dive deeper into the historical context of the book and engage in class discussions. SBA testing is here! First off, please ensure that your learner is getting plenty of rest and comes to school filled with delicious breakfast! Also, if you have not already sent headphones to school, please do so on Monday. Learners have been working hard to prepare and we know they will do wonderfully!
During off-days, we will be continuing our revolutionary time-period book The Fighting Ground and diving into the beginning of our narrative ghost stories! These are one of the students' favorite writing pieces throughout the year and are always an exciting storytelling experience for both learners and facilitators :) Welcome back from break! Learners will continue exploring the political and social causes of Revolutionary War by examining the lives of individuals who played key roles in the Revolution, including King George III, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Paul Revere, and Patrick Henry. Learners will read and watch biographical accounts of these individuals' lives, and engage in discussions and writing activities to reflect on each individual's perspective and contribution to the American Revolution.
Learners will begin the brainstorming process for their next major writing piece, ghost stories! Learners will need to incorporate at least one individual from the American Revolution into their story. This week, learners will brainstorm what scares them (to use as inspiration for their story), and begin developing the main character of their story. Learners will continue reading The Fighting Ground by Avi and utilize their background knowledge on the Colonial Era and American Revolution to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context of the story. |
