5th Grade humanities
This will be the last full week of seminar rotations. Learners will have their final humanities period on Monday, June 5th. This week, learners will present their Team Facilitation lessons. Each team will facilitate their lesson on their assigned day, and meet with their humanities facilitator following the lesson to reflect on what went well and what could have been better in their lesson.
Learners will also consider what humanities writing pieces and accomplishments they are most proud of and complete a reflection sheet in preparation for LLCs.

We have wrapped up our last writing unit of the year with the completion of learners' "How to..." informational writing pieces. For the last two weeks of humanities seminar, learners will collaborate with a group of peers in a "Team Facilitation". Each team will take on a different ELA or social studies topic that we studied this year, and develop a mini lesson that they will facilitate for the whole class to review the topic. This week, teams will develop their lesson plan that addresses at least one specific standard, and prepare for their lesson facilitation next week.
This week, learners will continue working on their "How to..." writing pieces. Learners will utilize feedback from their second peer conference to revise and strengthen their writing, and research additionally information to integrate into their third writing draft. Learners will focus on citing their sources in two ways: in a bibliography and quoting sources in their writing.
We will review "How to..." writing examples from previous years and the writing rubric to guide learners' final revisions of their writing. We will have a publishing part on Friday to celebrate learners' hard work! This week, fifth graders will be taught how to peer edit using a fish bowl type lesson. This practice will give them a chance to hear their facilitator read a "How to" as well as listen to a classmate read theirs. The outer circle will watch and listen while the "fish" (learner and facilitator) inside the circle model/practice giving one another constructive feedback and ways that they can improve their writing. Afterwards, they will begin typing their "How to essays onto Google Drive. Towards the end of the end of the week, learners will all practice peer editing using the graphic organizer from the beginning of the week.
Learners will continue reading Birchbark House too. |
