5th Grade humanities
This week, learners will begin their informational research project. Learners will start by brainstorming topics they are curious about, and then narrow their topics to three options. Learners will briefly research these potential topics to explore possible online resources, and develop driving questions that would guide their research for each topic. Learners will then choose their topic, finalize their research driving question, and begin researching to answer their driving question. Learners will take notes, sort information into categories in a graphic organizer, and cite their sources.
We will continue our social studies unit on the Colonial Era of North America. Learners will watch an informational video about why people came to the colonies from England, and how/when the colonies were established. . Learners will then work in partners to begin creating a Prezi presentation about one of the 13 colonies that highlights the colony's founding, climate, natural resources and industries, and type of government.

This week, we will begin our next ELA unit on informational writing, and social studies unit on English colonization of North America. Learners will reflect on how/when we use informational writing in our daily lives. Learners will read informational articles and determine the main idea and supporting details. Learners will also explore how they can find reliable sources of information on the internet, and will review websites to identify aspects that show whether each website is reliable or unreliable.
Learners will also examine the difference between primary and secondary sources, and what sources they encounter in daily life. Learners will be challenged to find a primary and secondary source on given topics, and reflect on the different ways information is presented in each source. This week, we will wrap up our social studies unit on world explorers. Learners will have the opportunity to imagine and develop their own voyage of exploration. Learners will label a map of a newly discovered "world" and write journal entries that describe why they choose to explore, and highlights/outcomes of their exploration.
Learners will have their second humanities benchmark assessment this week. |
